Open Access Journal Projects at Duke and UGA

June 9, 2011

This morning I learned from my former Duke colleague, Digital Strategist Paolo Mangiafico (@paoloman) that the Duke Libraries and the editors of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Studies have taken that journal open-access, using the Open Journal Systems software.  A couple of hours later, along came notice from current colleague Andy Carter (@cartandy) that the first open-access issue of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement is live. This is a journal (although obviously not one about Classics!) hosted by the UGA  Library, also using Open Journal Systems.

I first learned about OJS in a session on open-access journals at THATCamp SE in Atlanta in March. It’s great to see scholarly journals, especially a fairly prominent journal in Classics, moving to open-access in general, and especially heartening for me to see the fruitful collaborations between university libraries and the editors of scholarly journals on campus.  At Duke, the close relationship between Classics and the Libraries is longstanding (all those papyri!).  A press release on the new open-access journals at Duke closes with a heartening quote from Joshua D. Sosin:

The Duke Libraries and the Department of Classical Studies have long collaborated to provide free, web-based access to some of the University’s most ancient materials. We are thrilled to be able to extend that partnership to scholarly research. Socrates famously did not accept fees; this piece of critical infrastructure allows us to do the same!

Do you work on a scholarly journal? If you’re thinking at all about open-access journal publishing, do talk to your university library – they may be the partner who can make it work.

New Classical Art Resources – CLAROS and ArtStor

May 23, 2011

Late last week the new CLAROS digital image system debuted.  This open project, based at Oxford with many international partners, provides access to digital images of classical art (and other collections). The images are searchable and browseable, with multiple facets possible (i.e., one can show all  skyphoi from Vulci).  Of special interest are the image-matching searches, available for classical sculpture and pottery, which use digital technology to examine an image you upload or link to and find matches in the CLAROS database.  The project also makes use of structured metadata (RDF, JSON, KML) and advanced users can create detailed SPARQL queries.

Not new, but new to UGA subscribers, we now have access to ArtStor (link takes you through the UGA system and will ask for a password if you are off campus).  This resource includes high-quality digital images with good metadata from museums and other collections around the world.  The site is searchable and browseable, and the creation of a free account allows the user to save images in groups and download sets of images to use offline.

Librarian in the Classroom

November 29, 2010

It’s the time of year when I write up an annual report of what I’ve done, for my supervisor to review.  This year I taught 20 classes, up from 11 in 2009 (yes, we keep statistics on this, as on, well, practically everything).  What does it mean when a librarian teaches a class?

Unlike faculty members, librarians mainly teach one session of a class, having been invited in by the regular faculty member to cover library resources related to a class project, often a research paper.  Except at the 4000 and graduate level, I have usually never seen the students before, and am unlikely to see them again, although some do follow up for individual meetings.  I don’t have much knowledge about their background or level of competence at conducting university-level research; I can assume that senior majors and grad students know more than freshmen, but most classes have a mix of skill levels.  I usually have 50 minutes to cover topics as varied as how to use Wikipedia (very carefully if at all!), the importance of Boolean searching in scholarly article databases (searching ‘etruscan tombs with images of charon’ will net you nada in Jstor), how to parse a call number and find a book on the shelf, and how the heck to use L’Annee Philologique.

My saving grace is a web page I custom-create for each class.  At UGA we use an open-source software developed by Oregon State University called Library a la Carte, which allows us to create modular chunks of content and re-use and mix them on multiple web pages.  Thus I use some of the same content, but with variations based on student need, in pages for a 3000-level Latin class writing a term paper on the Aeneid, a 1000-level Honors class writing a short paper on Greek Civilization, and a 4000-level theater class playing the Reacting to the Past Athens Game.  The faculty member can embed these pages in the campus course management software (at UGA, it’s eLearning Commons).  Teaching, and providing a page of resources like this, is one of the best ways that we as librarians can reach out to groups of students, rather than waiting for them to come to us, often after they’ve wasted time fruitlessly Googling.  It results in better papers for the faculty members as well.

If your class has an assignment of any kind that asks the students to do research, please consider inviting a librarian to your class to teach the students college-level research skills – don’t assume they come to you with these skills.  Most universities have a subject specialist librarian assigned to every department; if you don’t know yours, ask at the Reference Desk the next time you are in the library.

New Books at the Blahblah Library

September 29, 2010

Chuck Jones recently raised the topic of Acquisitions Lists published online by various key libraries at his Ancient World Online.  His suggestions, augmented by those added in comments, are the following:

I looked at a couple of other schools and found that in many cases while no official list is published, it is possible to generate a list and then narrow it down by call number range, for example, to find a list of new books in one’s field of interest.  Bryn Mawr is like this, for example (one can customize the page and set it to email a new list weekly, so you could see all books added to the Carpenter Library, for example), and Princeton has a similar interface.

So too is the UGA Library catalog; we have a “new book” search in the GIL Classic interface, which can then be sorted by call number.  Because books relevant to Classics fall into multiple possible call numbers, I decided to do a test of how long it would take me to generate a list of relevant new books added to the UGA Libraries in a sample week.  The answer: about 20 minutes.

Of the 609 items added to the Main Library collection on the week ending 9/28/10, I judged 11 to be relevant to the interests of the Classics Department of UGA, based solely on their titles taken in conjunction with their Library of Congress call numbers.  I found skimming titles an easier way to go through the list than call numbers, since I did not have a specific set of call number ranges in mind as targets.  In fact, call numbers included B, BJ, D, DF, DS, GT, and PA.

The next question becomes, is it worth it for me to spend about half an hour each week culling new books of possible interest to Classics, and emailing the faculty and graduate students?  I do run into some of them regularly as they peruse the new book shelves in the Main Library, so clearly our acquisitions are of some interest.  Perhaps I shall survey the faculty and see if this service would be valuable to them.

For the record, this week’s list is as follows (I am probably overly-inclusive, if anything, especially when it comes to archaeological works – one’s prejudices at work!):
